{"id":64,"date":"2019-05-10T16:46:41","date_gmt":"2019-05-10T16:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/npc.mycareerfocus.org\/fall-2019-volume-5-issue-1\/new-program-surgical-technology\/"},"modified":"2019-05-11T00:05:36","modified_gmt":"2019-05-11T00:05:36","slug":"new-program-surgical-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npc.mycareerfocus.org\/fall-2019-volume-5-issue-1\/new-program-surgical-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"New Program: Surgical Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Responding to requests from regional healthcare partners, Northland Pioneer College will<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>become the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">third community college in Arizona offering an associate\u2019s degree in <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Surgical Technology<\/span>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">The demand for certified surgical technologists is high, locally and nationally, and by 2021 this occupation will <i>require<\/i> an associate degree, which will be offered by<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">NPC. The <i>U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/i> reports the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">median annual salary in Arizona for surgical technicians<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">is <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">$50,610<\/span>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Surgical technologists, also called operating room<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">technicians, are expected to think and react to situations quickly and effectively. They often work with the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">latest surgical equipment such as fiber optics, laser<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">technology and robotics! They serve alongside physicians, surgeons, registered nurses and other health-care workers by preparing operating rooms for surgery, maintaining a sterile environment, ensuring there are adequate supplies for surgery, preparing patients for surgery, helping surgeons during surgery by passing them instruments and performing other crucially important tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Once the operation is complete, surgical technologists may apply bandages and other dressings to the incision site. They may also help transfer patients to recovery rooms and restock operating rooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Work settings for graduates of the NPC surgical tech<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">nologist program may include hospitals, surgical centers or other outpatient settings. Graduates may also work in<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">the surgical equipment industry and veterinary services.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Students must be admitted to the Surgical Technology<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">program to enroll in surgical technology courses. Prior to admission, students must successfully complete 22 credits of science and English courses.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">The program will initially be offered at the White Mountain Campus in Show Low. Summit Healthcare is<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">highly supportive of the new program and will offer opportunities for students to complete extensive clinical practicums at its Show Low hospital each year. Students may need to travel to gain valuable clinical experience at the Little Colorado Medical Center in Winslow or the Flagstaff Medical Center.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\"><b>Debra McGinty<\/b>, Dean of Nursing at NPC, says, \u201cThis<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">program will offer excellent career opportunities. The salary for surgical technologists is a great reward for the educational investment. Students will have the options of obtaining an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, a Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) or a Certificate of Proficiency (CP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Students earning the AAS degree will be prepared to<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">provide personal care services for stress reduction, relax<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">ation and preventative wellness techniques. They will<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">qualify for work in clinical settings with other health- care professionals, medical doctors, chiropractors, nurse<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">practitioners, full-service salons and day spas, health resorts, cruise ships, sports medicine clinics, gyms, hospitals and other health care offices.
