She\u2019s preparing for a career in aerospace engi-neering, a field that deals with designing and build-ing machines that fly. At the same time, she is raising awareness and funds for research that could lead to treatment for people who have an incurable disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">For the past six years, Pate has been raising money for research on a cure for Type 1 Diabetes, the disease her nine-year-old brother Lariat suffers from. The recipient of Pate\u2019s fundraising for diabetes research is Dr. Denise Faustman, director of the Immunobiology Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Faustman currently has a drug in FDA clinical trials that, if successful, could be used to treat the 1.25 million<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Americans who suffer from Type 1 Diabetes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Pate says, \u201cAfter my brother was diagnosed with Type<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">1 Diabetes at age three, we soon learned that there is no<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">cure and many children die from this condition each year. It is my prayer that someday they will be able to go<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">to sleep at night and not wonder if they will wake up. I<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">found out about Dr. Faustman\u2019s promising research through my family\u2019s own research. I have not met her yet, but hope to someday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Pate, who is only 18, is very focused on her goals. While a high school student at Round Valley, she also took college classes through <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">dual enrollment<\/span> at NPC. This allowed her to earn her high school diploma at the same time she earned an associate of science degree at<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">NPC! Pate has even been awarded an <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">All-Arizona Academic Team<\/span> scholarship at NPC, which will cover all her tuition costs when she transfers to Arizona State<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">University (ASU) this fall to study aerospace engineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">\u201cNPC provided me with a great opportunity to get a<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">head start on my college career without being over-whelmed at a huge university,\u201d Pate says. \u201cI also saved thousands of dollars in tuition costs by earning my first<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">two years of a bachelor\u2019s degree at NPC (which has the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">lowest tuition rate in the state), and now I am lucky<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">enough to have been selected for the All-AZ scholarship,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">which will save me the cost of ASU tuition. I am so grate<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">ful to NPC for all the opportunities they have provided me.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Pate\u2019s NPC English instructor <span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Ryan Jones<\/span> speaks in<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">glowing terms of her abilities as a student: \u201cI think Raney<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">is not just a great student. She\u2019s the kind of person who<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">elevates the whole class with her positive attitude and<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">work ethic. Other students observe her effort and parti<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">cipation in class and seem to step up their game to match<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">it. She is curious and always seems to want to get the most<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">she can out of her classes, which makes her a role model.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Pate is a great example of how NPC is helping <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">students transform their lives through education.
