Academic advisers are the key to your success at Northland Pioneer College.

Whether you’re a new student who just finished high school, an older student returning to school, just taking some classes to update your job skills, or planning to continue on at a university, your adviser plays an important role in your education. Advisers assist you in clarifying your educational and personal goals and help create detailed plans for you to meet those goals. NPC has an academic adviser available at every campus and center location.

You may be unsure of what you want to study or the range of options available to you. That’s OK. One of the great benefits of Northland Pioneer College is the ability to explore many different career options at a much lower cost. NPC advisers specialize in helping you sort though your interests and goals so you can select the path that’s right for you. Advisers will also tell you about financial aid and scholarship options and direct you on how to start the application process.

For many students, course requirements for degrees and certificates can be confusing, but an NPC adviser will make sure you stay on track. No matter what program you are pursuing, you should work with an adviser to be sure you’re taking the right classes to meet your academic goals. Otherwise, you might find that you’ve wasted effort, money, and time. Students should meet with an NPC adviser every semester to ensure continued academic success.

Academic advisers are also a great resource when you need a sounding board to help you make the right choice. If you find you’re struggling in a course and fear that you may earn a lower grade than you hoped for, a conversation with an NPC adviser can make you aware of all your options, such as tutoring, or deciding to cut your losses and withdraw from the course. An adviser will ensure you understand any ramifications of withdrawing from a class, such as possibly having to return a portion of your financial aid money or receiving a “W” on your transcript.

Visiting with your adviser each semester will keep you informed about any changes to degree or certificate requirements or alert you to new program and course offerings that may interest you. And because some classes have prerequisites (classes that must be completed before taking another class) or are only offered in the fall or spring semester, NPC advisers can help you set up your schedule in the right sequence. They can also tell you about faculty members who are experts in the areas you’re interested in.

NPC advisers are trained to help you meet your goals in regard to areas of study, certificates, associate degrees, and university transfer. They help you complete any necessary paperwork and get you to graduation day. Their only job is to help you succeed and cheer you on to the finish line. And when you achieve your goals, you may even feel like you made a friend along the way.
