Yes, and it starts with Northland Pioneer College.

A little known scholarship awarded every year by the Arizona Board of Regents, only to community college students is the All-Arizona Academic Team scholarship. Each Arizona public community college is allowed to select two students per campus/center location to be on their team. For Northland Pioneer College that can mean up to 18 students per year!

Students who complete their first two years of a bachelor’s degree at NPC have already saved up to $16,736 in just tuition alone and this scholarship provides them with a tuition waiver (FREE tuition) to complete their Bachelor’s degree at ASU, NAU, or UofA. That’s a smart start and finish. It can mean earning a four-year degree with little to no debt!

To apply, NPC students must be entering the last semester of completing their associate degree, have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and a history of leadership and/or volunteerism within the college or community.

(l to r) President Dr. Jeanne Swarthout celebrates with NPC’s 2015 All-Arizona Academic Team: Kasey Johnston, Ashley McDowell, Jenna Shockey, Isaac Schimmel, Sara Anderson, Alfredo Ortiz, Jennifer DoBell, Daniel McGee, Kelcee Moore, Charles Manley and Moira Hamilton. Lauren Peters and Laurie Shyann Vance were unable to attend.

This year, Northland Pioneer College selected 13 outstanding NPC students to receive the 2015 All-Arizona Academic Team scholarship. Receiving the tuition waivers were Jennifer DoBell and Kelcee Moore from the Holbrook Campus; Lauren Peters and Jenna Ché Shockey representing the Winslow Campus, Sara Anderson and Moira Hamilton from the Show Low Campus; Daniel McGee and Isaac Schimmel representing the Snowflake/Taylor Campus; Alfredo Ortiz and Charles Manley from the Saint Johns Center; Ashley McDowell and Laurie Shyann Vance from the Springerville/Eagar Center; and Kasey Johnston representing the Whiteriver Center. The tuition waivers are awarded by the Arizona Board of Regents to encourage the state’s top community college scholars to finish their education. Studies show that students who start their education at a community college and then transfer to a university often perform better than those who just go directly to a four-year institution.

For the first time in the All-Arizona Academic Team’s 20-year history, NPC had more applicants than available nominations. A student must have taken a class at, or originating from, that location to be considered for one of the two nominations.

This year’s NPC nominees were honored at a luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Mesa, along with over 60 other top scholars from the state’s other community colleges.
